It's official: up to 91% less climate impact than flying

Our CO₂ footprint has been independently audited and verified by myclimate. The result: A Twiliner journey causes up to 91% fewer emissions than a comparable flight — that's equivalent to ten Twiliner journeys for the same footprint as a single flight. While savings may vary depending on the route and occupancy, we are as sustainable as a train, per passenger kilometer. Based on data from mobitool (the Swiss platform for calculating the environmental impact of transport), we recognized the potential of overnight bus travel to significantly reduce emissions while being comfortable and time-saving. Now, myclimate has reviewed and verified our calculations with mobitool… so it's official.

“How environmentally friendly is a Twiliner journey?”

To answer this question, the CO₂emissions of various modes of transport are compared and divided by the number of passengers. This results in the CO₂emissions per passenger kilometer.

CO₂emissions include not only those from fuel combustion but also those from vehicle manufacturing, disposal, and maintenance, as well as infrastructure like roads or stations. Additionally, other greenhouse gases such as methane are included. Standardized, this is referred to as CO₂equivalents (CO₂e), or, for comparing vehicles, CO₂e per passenger-kilometer.

According to myclimate's calculations, Twiliner performs well:

A modern coach, powered by conventional diesel and carrying 16 passengers, has a carbon footprint of approximately 74 grams of CO₂-equivalents (CO₂e) per passenger-kilometer. If the coach is operated with biodiesel, the climate impact is reduced to approximately 24 grams of CO₂e per passenger-kilometer, making it up to 85% smaller than by plane. Since it is still unclear whether we can refuel with pure, clean biodiesel abroad, this value is still hypothetical.
